Bone Densitometry
Bone Densitometry: Frequently Asked Questions | Resources
A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test is also referred to as bone densitometry or a DEXA scan. It is an important diagnostic tool that not only measures the amount of calcium in certain bones - but also can be used to estimate the risk of fracture. It is used to assist in diagnosing osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition of low bone density that reduces bone strength and may result in fractures, physical deformity and pain. The National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that 22 million women and 3 million men in the U.S. have osteoporosis and most individuals do not know they have the disease until they suffer a fracture.
Osteoporosis screening has lead to the earlier diagnosis of this disease, in many cases even before symptoms occur. Bone density tests are also used to determine if particular medications are improving bone density and strength over time.
Bone density tests are safe, painless and quick tests that can measure bone strength and predict fracture risk before you develop osteoporosis, so prevention therapy can be started.
